Lafayette County sheriff’s deputies operating out of Mayo recently made the largest drug bust in the county’s history. According to local media reports, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department seized about 172,000 joints with a street value of $456,000. The drug bust occurred after a traffic stop where a 50-year-old man was pulled over for swerving. Officials observed that the man was nervous, had shaky hands and did not make eye contact during the traffic stop. Officials allegedly found the drugs when they searched his Winnebago. He was then arrested and charged with trafficking of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Speaking with the Police

If you have arrested on suspicion of committing a crime, it is important that you are careful about what you say to the police. Begin by providing your name. Do not give a false identity, as that is a crime that carries significant penalties. Beyond providing your identification, it is advisable to decline answering any questions. If they arrest you, do not resist physically or verbally. Simply cooperate and continue to be polite. At the station, they may encourage you to cooperate with their investigation. Remember, they are working with prosecutors and investigators to build a case against you. Even if you are innocent, it is important that you retain an attorney who will speak on your behalf.

Plea Deals and Defenses

You may be considering accepting a plea bargain in exchange for lesser charges or penalties. Before making any such decisions, it would be in your best interests to consider all your legal options. Depending on the circumstances of your case, it may be possible to avoid jail time, to negotiate for reduced charges or penalties or to have the charges completely dismissed.
