Government databases show that 25 residents of Bushnell are registered sex offenders.
The Crackdown on Sex Crimes
Since March of 2011, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has conducted an annual project titled, “STARCOP.” Each year, local law enforcement officers conduct a week- long operation to target individuals suspected of using the Internet to sexually exploit children. Recently, detectives used a Bushnell residence to conduct the covert Internet sting operation. Officials pretended to be minors online in the hope of catching adults who were willing to meet minors for sex. During this operation, undercover detectives spent 400 hours on the Internet, which resulted in the arrest of 23 suspects. Individuals who are convicted of sex crimes, in addition to other consequences, must register as sex offenders. This could make it challenging for them to find a place to live or obtain gainful employment.
Your Legal Options
There may be several options available to a defendant in a criminal case depending on the nature of the incident, the circumstances of the alleged crime and the defendant’s prior criminal record.
- Diversion programs: These programs are similar to being put on probation. You will have to report in regularly, attend classes and complete community service. Once completed, the charges will be dismissed. Diversion programs are typically only available for first-time, nonviolent offenders.
- Plea bargain: A plea bargain, also known as a plea agreement or a plea deal, is an agreement in a criminal case between the prosecutor and defendant whereby the defendant agrees to plead guilty to a charge in return for some concession from the prosecutor. For example, the defendant may plead guilty to a less serious charge or may plead guilty to the original criminal charge in return for more lenient sentencing.
- Trial: This is when the case goes before the judge or the jury who will determine based on facts and evidence if the defendant is guilty or not guilty.
