At the time of the attack, Franke was a student at the University of Central Florida in Orlando where she majored in education. She was discovered one day dead in her apartment. Police said that she had been robbed prior to being murdered and that her killer left DNA at the scene of the crime.
Police worked with a matching company that was able to pair the DNA to Holmes. Police believe that Holmes and Franke had no connection to one another, but that it was just a robbery gone wrong.
Holmes denied the killing and is currently being held without bond in the Orange County Jail.
