The suspect was identified as 54-year-old Aurelio Rodriguez. He and the victim and the victim’s wife had campsites next to one another at the Bahia Honda State Park. On Friday night, they brought a bottle of alcohol over to the campsite to share with their neighbor and quickly realized that he had already been drinking.
According to initial reports, Rodriguez fell and the husband tried to lift him. When he tried lifting him to his feet, Rodriguez leaned over and bit off the others man’s fingertip. Paramedics found the missing fingertip but they were unable to reattach it.
Rodriguez received charges of aggravated battery.
Big Pine Key Aggravated Battery LawsIn Miami and across Florida, aggravated battery occurs any time that a suspect intentionally attacks another person with the intent to inflict great bodily harm. Depending on how serious the crime, those accused can face either a misdemeanor or a felony. The penalties that follow these types of criminal incidents can be incredibly harsh and can include mandatory prison time of 15 years or more.
The state of Florida takes these acts very seriously, as they can be extremely violent in nature and lead to permanent injury.
