Tampa, FL – Man Formerly on “Deadliest Catch” Arrested in Tampa on Drug Charges

October 24, 2019

TAMPA, FL (October 21, 2019)Wtsp.com writes that a man who was on the popular Discovery Channel show “Deadliest Catch” was arrested earlier this month for reckless driving. Officers who carried out the arrest of the suspect found heroin on him, and he is now facing several drug charges.

The 33-year-old suspect is being charged with felony possession of heroin and for possession of drug paraphernalia, which is a misdemeanor.

The penalty for possession of drugs is dependent on the substance in question. Drugs considered to have the highest potential for abuse are categorized as schedule one drugs. This includes heroin and other drugs that have no accepted medical uses.

Possession of a drug categorized as schedule one carries a heavier sentence. Having more than ten grams of such a substance can lead to a maximum sentence of 30 years behind bars and a fine of up to $10,000. For individuals with previous convictions, the penalties are even worse.

In order to successfully convict a person of drug possession, a Florida prosecutor will have to show the suspect had knowledge of the drug, that the substance is a controlled substance, that accused had control of the drug, and in cases involving drug dealing, that the suspect intended to sell the substance.

There are a number of ways in which defense attorneys can challenge drug charges, including the circumstances of the arrest. For those arrested, listen to the Miranda Rights, and take seriously your right to remain silent and your right to an attorney. For people accused of drug-related crimes, it is important to find an attorney who knows how to fight the charges and reduce the potential consequences.
