GAINSVILLE, FL (October 18, 2019) - According to Gainesville.com, a 70-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly committing sexual battery on a young girl. Reports indicate the crime took place several years ago and involved a child who was six or seven years old at the time.

The charges include sexual assault of a victim under twelve and lewd and lascivious behavior. Based on court records, the crime was reported last March. The victim says that the assault took place in the suspect’s home in Gainesville, and the child said that she was warned by the suspect not to report the incident. The victim’s mother says that she confronted the suspect while he was incarcerated at the Lake Correctional Institution for committing a similar crime on another victim. The mother said the suspect confessed to her but claimed there were no additional victims.

The suspect is currently scheduled to be released in June of 2032. He was taken to the Alachua County jail last week, where he was arrested for the additional crime.

When a person commits a legal offense or crime, there is a statute of limitations that limits the amount of time in which the person can be sued or charged. In the case of criminal sexual battery against a child less than the age of twelve, there is no statute of limitations in the State of Florida. This means that if a crime is reported years after it was allegedly committed, the suspect can still be charged and face serious prison time. Of course, in these situations, proving a crime that took place many years in the past can be challenging. Individuals who are accused of sexual crimes can face civil liability for their actions in addition to criminal charges.
