Summerfield, FL (January 21, 2019) – Police arrested a man from Summerfield this week after he locked a woman in a bedroom after battering her the night before.  She was able to send text messages to a friend who was able to notify authorities about the situation.

Deputies arrived at the home at 14454 SE 90th Avenue on Wednesday where they spoke to the woman through the window of a bedroom. She told police that she was locked inside the room. She also told police that 64-year-old Edward Clark Babcock had strangled her the night before so badly that she wasn’t able to breathe.

Police had to forcibly open the door to gain access to the woman so that she could get out. The sergeant at the scene reported that the door had deadbolts on both sides and a key was required to unlock it.

Babcock told deputies that he had never physically battered the woman and that she was able to leave at her own will. Babcock also told deputies that the woman locked herself in her bedroom and must have misplaced the key.

Police transported Babcock to the Marion County Jail, where he was then charged with domestic battery by strangulation, false imprisonment, kidnapping, and a variety of other related charges.
