A 38-year-old former school board member has pleaded guilty to enticing a minor to engage in sexual activity in Florida. According to The Hartford Courant, the arrest resulted from a child sex sting earlier this year. The former Windsor School Board member pleaded to a crime punishable by a minimum sentence of 10 years, a fine of $250,000, and five years of probation. Additionally, he will be required to register as a sex offender.

There are many different sex crimes in Florida that can result from the pursuit of or engagement in sexual contact with a minor. According to Florida’s Computer Pornography and Child Exploitation Prevention Act: “Any notice, statement, or advertisement of any minor's name, telephone number, place of residence, physical characteristics, or other descriptive or identifying information for purposes of facilitating, encouraging, offering, or soliciting sexual conduct of or with any minor, or the visual depiction of such conduct, commits a felony of the third degree.”

These types of charges can result in life-changing criminal penalties and they often have negative social and professional consequences. Individuals convicted of these types of crimes will have to register as a sex offender. Their whereabouts will likely be restricted. Many convicted sex offenders find it extremely difficult to get employed or even find a place to live after they have served their sentence.
